Janet: “Accounting Department, Janet speaking how may I help you?”
Scammer: “Janet, I am processing the order to replace your copier toner but the part number is coming up invalid. Can you confirm the model number of your copier?”
Janet: “Sure let me check. May I place you on hold?”
Scammer: “Certainly, take your time.”
Janet: “Here we go, we have a Sharp AL-280”
Scammer: “Great, thanks for checking. I see we have these in limited stock. We have run these on sale and we are almost out of stock. You may want to double your order to ensure you can get these at the sales price. Do you want me to go ahead and ship you 10 at the sales price?”
Janet: “Well, Bob Green is the Office Manager. He normally orders for us and is out today. I am not sure.”
Scammer: “When I spoke with Bob last week he was mentioning that big job you have coming up next month. He will probably appreciate your being proactive. Can I go ahead and confirm these for you?”
Janet: “Well, sure…go ahead and send us 10. I am sure Bob won’t mind.”
Scammer: “No problem. I will ship these out today. Thanks Janet and have a great day.”
Janet has just become a victim of Toner Piracy. She has unknowingly given the Scammer all of the information necessary to begin sending copier supplies she did not order and bills for those supplies.
