APPAREL

  • Dress for Success! Focus on tailoring your look to portray your own sense of style. Invest in a basic black and navy suit. You can mix and match with various shells. Dressing the outfit up with accessories is another way to keep the look fresh. Many websites will offer you a discount shopping pass when you sign up for their newsletter or advertisements. Click here for some of my favorites. Remember; know your audience…and your dress code. A mix of trendy pieces and classics always looks classier and more elegant than an entire wardrobe of fashion-magazine items.
  • Visit your local consignment stores for gently used pieces that will complete your wardrobe.
  • Don't get hung up on labels. It is more important to wear clothing that fits, flatters and is easy to maintain. Even low-priced bargain stores (Target and Wal-Mart) can have pieces that look good, so always have an eye out.
  • Shop end of the season clearance sales. New Years Day is the start of placing spring and summer clothing. Know ahead of time how much you intend to spend on something and try to stick with it.
  • Make sure your new clothes are machine washable. Trips to the dry-cleaners can be costly (gas and service)
  • Go to a discount chain for your trendy shoes - you can get cheap, fun stuff there, because you don't need it to last more than a season or two. But for basics you'll wear every season buy good shoes that are comfortable. Purchasing real leather rather is a investment. Just be sure to maintain the shoes with oils and polishes to keep them in good condition. Try remnant department stores like DSW or TJ Maxx for good-quality shoes at discount prices.

SKIN CARE AND HYGIENE

  • The eyes have it…In many cases your face and hands are the first thing people notice about you. It is very important to keep your skin in top condition. While many people opt to visit the drugstore for beauty and hygiene products, why not earn discounted or free products? Host a Mary Kay party. What better way to find out about the latest skin care products and beauty secrets? Not only will you get customized products that are just for you, but also enjoy the free gifts reserved for the hostess.
  • Aveda beauty school and Paul Mitchell Schools offer discounted facials. Call your favorite salon to see if they have a training program. If not, maybe they offer a student special or have a day of discounted haircuts (for instance, if Monday is a slow day for them).

HAIR

  • Another best kept secret is getting a salon-style haircut or facial for a fraction of the regular price. Many Beauty Colleges offer a full menu of services performed by students under the direct supervision of an instructor. You can get a cut and style for as little as $10! (Sometimes they are even free, but tip are appreciated). Click here for a directory of schools in your area.
  • Don’t skimp on conditioner! Shampoo is for cleaning and never use more than a dime-sized amount unless you have long hair. And be sure to also cut off split ends. Sign up for discounts and offers through discount stores like Ulta. They offer discounts and even free shipping if you do not have the time to visit a store. Every web order ships with free samples.
