Preparing for an Interview [PI2]
In day 2 of a 30 days series we explore appropriate responses to the interview question:
What are your greatest strengths?
You can rest assured an interviewer will ask this question. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your talent.
It is very important to strike the perfect balance – you don’t want to come across as egotistical or arrogant. Neither is this a time to be modest.
You know that your key strategy is to first uncover your interviewer’s must have attributes and tailor your response to fit his needs. Pick about three of these traits that all employers love to see in their employees:
- A proven track record as an achiever…especially if your achievements match up with the employer’s greatest wants and needs.
- Intelligence…management “savvy”.
- Honesty…integrity…a decent human being.
- Good fit with corporate culture…someone to feel comfortable with…a team player who meshes well with interviewer’s team.
- Likeability…positive attitude…sense of humor.
- Good communication skills.
- Dedication…willingness to walk the extra mile to achieve excellence.
- Definiteness of purpose…clear goals.
- Enthusiasm…high level of motivation.
- Confident…healthy…a leader.
If you have not clearly identified the attributes needed for the position try this type of response:
“My strengths include time management, problem solving, confidentially, working well with others and other skills that contribute to success in the job. Is there a specific strength you are looking for that I can demonstrate?”
This response is especially helpful when interviewers are conducting a general or exploratory interview.
Your goal is to make a good impression on the people you meet, and to get them to identify you as the best candidate.
