Why are you in the administrative field?

Having spent over 20 years in various administrative positions, invariably I will be asked, “You know so much about so many things, why are you still an Executive Assistant?”

After I swallow hard to get that lump of irritation out of my throat I try to articulate a meaningful answer to the question.  I forgive people who wonder why I am “still” an assistant, though I do not understand why they think it is a bad thing.

The simple truth is that I enjoy what I do and where I work. My day is never routine and I am trusted with confidential information and charged with complex tasks. My day can range from routine office maintenance (supplies, facility upkeep, etc..) to researching complex international flights. I am reliable and trustworthy, which leads to rewards that exceed the boundaries of compensation.

I have lived in several states and worked for several Fortune 500 companies. I have been an office manager, bookkeeper, HR assistant, recruiter, sales assistant and Executive Assistant to C-level executives.  These opportunities have afforded me a very diverse skill set, which can be easily transferred should the need arise.

All of this makes me lucky. I am employable in many capacities. I believe that the other 4.3 million assistants in the United States can agree.

Why are you in the administrative field? I would love to hear your thoughts.
